GETTING VENEERS- BEFORE & AFTER

Things to Consider Before Getting Veneers

Not all dental caries require a coating: Generally, coating is not necessary for small diameter caries on teeth. In such cases, another form of restorative dentistry, filling treatment is more appropriate. In some cases, caries may have progressed to the roots of the teeth. In this case, dentists prefer performing root canal treatment before they make the coating to support the vulnerable teeth. They check the structural condition of the tooth to determine whether a coating is necessary. Infected roots and large cavities spoil the structure of a tooth much more rapidly and seriously. In this case, coating is a must. In the milder cases of tooth decay, filling treatment will typically be sufficient.

Coating may also be necessary after filling

Filling application is the best solution for small diameter caries and cavities. However, this application does not eliminate the need for future coating. Cavities or cavities can endanger the tooth structure even after filling application.

Tooth decay is not the only reason for veneers

Excessive cavities and caries are just a few reasons the dentist recommends veneers. Other reasons for coating include:

Cosmetic reasons: The dentist may recommend veneers for teeth with discoloured or stained for a better match neighbouring teeth.

Implants: Veneers can wonderfully function as caps for implants.

Dental bridges or dentures: Dentists and patients prefer veneers to fully attach dentures, the dental bridge or dentures.

No type of veneer lasts a lifetime: Like teeth, the lifespan of veneers will also depend on how well patients take care of them. In order to prolong the life of the veneers, patients should wear protective dental equipment for the problem of clenching and sticky or they should avoid hard foods. They should brush their teeth at least twice a day and use dental floss. If patients neglect healthy oral hygiene habits, bacteria accumulate under the coatings and the teeth become weak again.

Dentists can fit Veneers in a single session: In the past years, it took several sessions to attach the veneers. However, nowadays, dentists easily install coatings in a single session. This is very important for people with busy schedules.

What to Pay Attention to After Getting Veneers

The healing process after the veneer tooth will generally take a few days. In this process, the body will get rid of the irritation and inflammation associated with the application. Patients may experience temporary sensitivity, discomfort or pain after application. In addition to all these, the things that patients should consider after the crown are:

Numbness due to Anaesthesia

If dentists use local anaesthesia during the coating procedure, there may be numbness in the mouth for a few hours after the application. During this time, many patients can unknowingly injure the inside of the mouth, as they cannot feel warnings such as heat or pain.

Therefore, it is necessary to avoid drinking hot liquids or chewing hard objects during this period. However, there may be some bruising or inflammation, especially in the lower jaw area, shortly after the application. These adverse situations will disappear spontaneously within a few days without the need for any treatment.

Pain, Discomfort and Sensitivity

Many patients may experience some pain or minimal discomfort in the coating area following the veneer procedure. This condition usually resolves within a few days or weeks without any treatment. However, after dentists attach the coatings, some sensitivity may occur in the surrounding gums. To reduce pain and make patients feel more comfortable with such ailments, the dentist may recommend pain relievers and topical anaesthetic gels. If the sensitivity or pain condition persists for more than a few weeks or is severe, consult a dentist.

Care of Temporary Coatings

Since temporary coatings are much more fragile than permanent coatings, special attention is necessary to prevent traumatic situations. In general, patients can use their teeth normally and continue brushing. However, in order not to damage the temporary coatings, they should pay attention to the following recommendations:

Sticky or chewy foods such as chewing gum should be avoided, which could remove temporary coatings.

Hard foods should not be consumed as they will damage the coatings.

The chewing action should be done with the opposite teeth for a period.

Flossing should be avoided when temporary coatings are present.

Dietary and Oral Care Recommendations During Recovery

When permanent coatings are attached and the numbing effect of anaesthetics ends, patients can normally consume any food. However, it would be good to avoid sticky foods in the first 24 hours following the permanent coating procedure. In the first place, patients should avoid hard, sticky or chewy foods such as chewing gum. However, after a while, such foods can be started slowly.

A healthy oral care should continue to be practiced throughout life. It should be noted that veneers, especially the abutment teeth, are extremely susceptible to decay along the gum line. For this reason, teeth should be brushed with fluoride-containing toothpaste at least twice a day and dental floss should be used carefully every day.
