What is halitosis?

Bad breath is a common problem that can cause significant psychological distress. There are a number of potential causes and treatments available.

Anyone can suffer from bad breath. It is estimated that 1 in 4 people have bad breath on a regular basis.

Halitosis is the third most common reason that people seek dental care, after tooth decay and gum disease.

Simple home remedies and lifestyle changes, such as improved dental hygiene and quitting smoking, can often remove the issue. If bad breath persists, however, it is advisable to visit a doctor to check for underlying causes.

Treatment of Bad Breath

You should consult a dentist first for the treatment of bad breath. The dentist can rate the smell on a scale by smelling the breath given both by mouth and nose. Since the back of the tongue is the most common source of bad breath, the dentist can scrape it out with a tool and evaluate its odor. If bad breath is caused by a bruise, your dentist will discuss with you how to treat it.

Mouthwashes and toothpaste: If halitosis occurs due to the accumulation of bacteria (plaque) in the teeth, the dentist may recommend a mouthwash that kills bacteria. A toothpaste containing an antibacterial agent may also be recommended.

Treatment of dental diseases: If the patient is found to have gum disease, he or she can be referred to a periodontist. Gum disease causes gingival recession. This paves the way for the bacteria that create a bad odor in these spaces. Bacteria can only be removed by a dentist.

If the dentist finds the teeth and gums healthy, he may refer the patient to a different specialist for treatment of the source of the odor. Antibiotics are used for the treatment of infections and the treatment of reflux is done with drugs that reduce the effects of diet and stomach acid.
